Getting to the top of Google

Posted on 02/07/2013

As any industry marketer will know, getting your website to rank #1 on Google for terms such as ‘windows’ or ‘double glazing’ isn’t easy. With thousands of companies all vying for the top spot, competition is fierce. Having a big Pay Per Click (PPC) budget is one option, but it is possible to rank highly organically through clever Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Here are 5 top SEO tips to building a highly ranking website:

·         Content content content: Google loves unique content. Creating great, contagious content that begs to be shared will have more people linking to your website and blog. A good thing when you consider Google gives you big ticks in its search engine calculations the more often back-links are created to you from other websites.

·         Optimise description and Meta Tags: A title tag is the easiest and most effective way to optimise your site or particular page. If you’re going to make a site on the keywords “windows Essex”, you need to focus on a title with this keyword to reach a better position in search engines. This goes for description tags too.

·         Build internal links: Internal link building is an on-site SEO tactic that consists of creating well-organised and thorough link structure among your own website’s pages. Pay particular attention to creating connections between your main pages and your homepage; do so via menu objects or by placing the links right into your on-page content.

·         Avoid using Flash and images as text: The search spiders that index websites only read text and are, for the most part, incapable of analysing Flash or image files. Do not use Flash-based navigation tools and stay away from creating content text that is in image form. Stick to site browsing code like jQuery or CSS and create purely text-based written content.

·         Embrace social media: Social media isn’t just something to play with in your spare time, it is now a major part of SEO. The more you use sites such as Twitter and Facebook, the better you will be able to compete in search engines, and the better you’ll be able to engage with  your customers.

None of this advice will gurantee you a top spot on Google – nobody can promise that – but it all represents good SEO and website practice, which Google and other search engines both recognise and credit you for. The result will be a well written, well-structured website, which suits both users and search engines alike.
