Hueck supplies ‘Mini Manhattan’ project in London

Hueck supplies ‘Mini Manhattan’ project in London

Posted on 04/07/2017

Hueck has supplied its market leading products for a ground-breaking project, which has been dubbed East London’s ‘Mini Manhattan’.

London City Island, a development in Canning Town, combines commercial and residential buildings and, within a few years, will also be home to the English National Ballet and the London Film School.

Just 20 minutes from the centre of London, the development is expected to draw in young professionals and the creative elite.

The 12-acre island is funded by Irish billionaire Sean Mulryan, with buildings designed by Glen Howells Architects and construction by Ballymore Developments.

Work is rapidly progressing on the construction of the brightly coloured residential properties, which are modelled after the colourful apartment blocks typical of Manhattan or Chicago. Hueck UK has supplied its profile for most of the windows and doors installed in the 1,700 apartments.

Leon Friend, Managing Director of Hueck, comments: “We are thrilled our products have been chosen for the project. London City Island is a modern, luxury development that demands quality products and our systems are designed to achieve superior aesthetics and performance.

“Large floor to ceiling windows transcend the barriers between inside and outside to offer spectacular city views and bring in the tropical gardens outside.”

Most of the units making up the residential towers were prefabricated in a factory in Holland and shipped to the UK, allowing quicker and more cost-effective construction.

Leon predicts many future projects will adopt this method, particularly developments in the city, where lack of space is a continuous issue for builders.

He says: “Lack of space in the city, restrictions on lorry loads and emissions targets means developers are looking to alternative construction methods. Clients are also looking beyond traditional construction methods and are demanding higher standards for costs, schedule and quality.

“Off-site construction solves these issues and provides a cost-effective and quick way of delivering both commercial and residential projects in the city.”
