Trust key to Hurst’s GRP fire door system

Trust key to Hurst’s GRP fire door system

Posted on 17/06/2022

Confidence in performance is essential for launching a new GRP Composite fire door system into the market post Grenfell. That has been the cornerstone of every level of development of the Neuma fds FD30 fire door system which has been recently launched by Hurst Doors.

Hurst has partnered with Fire Door Systems (fds) to bring a high-performance GRP Composite fire door system to the market. Sales Director, Mark Atkinson, explained: “Understandably, the industry demands a GRP Composite fire door system that can consistently demonstrate compliance and dependable performance.

“We have partnered with Fire Door Systems (fds) as the fds FD30 fire door has raised the bar for the industry and been subjected to robust testing, expert consultation and meticulous independent auditing, satisfying not just the British Standard BS 476-22 but the more demanding European test method standard BS EN 1634-1 too.”

The Neuma fds FD30 fire door has been subjected to rigorous independent testing in Germany, France and England, with fds exposing 44 doorsets to 22 bi-directional furnace tests in the space of six months. Test specimens were also installed in both rigid and flexible supporting wall construction – blockwork, steel and timber stud.

Every furnace test was filmed and timed, and every test specimen, including all components, sampled to ensure every doorset that has been audited has been tested and is repeatable. During testing, the FD30 fire door achieved an average of 45 minutes integrity.

Fds also performed smoke and security testing, with the system meeting the requirements of EN1634 for both fire and smoke as well as enhanced security standards PAS24:2016, a prerequisite for Secured by Design certification. The door set is also compliant with Building Regulations Approved Document B for fire safety.

Dave Walker, Director of Distinction Doors and founder of the fds system, said: “A bi-directional average of 45 minutes is extremely powerful, as is the fact the system has been tested in three furnaces. Often companies only test in one furnace however there can be variables between test laboratories.

“Absolutely every part of the testing process, from choosing to go with the EN 1634-1 test method as it’s considered around 10 percent more demanding than the British Standard, to using three variations of supporting wall construction, has ensured fds leave no stone unturned.

“It provides a complete confidence in the system, its performance and consistency and the Neuma fds FD30 fire door system is unrivalled in terms of testing.”

To strengthen trust and assurance even further, fds insist that all stages of the system’s supply chain are third party certified and Hurst was subjected to a stringent auditing process itself to be able to fabricate the system and achieve BM trada Fire Door Manufacturer certification.

The company has had to demonstrate its ability to produce the Neuma FDS fire door in accordance with the fds’ manufacturing manual and field of application, and the company continues to be audited every year.

“You can’t simply pick and choose if you want to fabricate the system, which is how it should be,” said Mark, “and our own manufacturing process to produce the Neuma fds FD30 fire door system has also been third party audited by BM Trada. It’s why we are a part of a trusted and accredited network to manufacture the fds system.”

As well as the compliance, certification, consistency and reliability benefits, the high performing Neuma fds fire door is low to maintain and boasts unparalleled security and weather performance testing.

Hurst manufacture the Neuma fds fire doors in 10 doors styles, with or without an overhead fanlight, and in a variety of colours. Clear and Stippolyte glazing options are available and all fire doorsets come with a high specification of door furniture and hardware as standard. Sidelights have also been tested and are due to be launched imminently.

Mark added: “With more than 20 years’ experience in the industry, we wanted to be able to supply local authorities, housing associations, house builders and developers with a GRP Composite fire door system that has been rigorously tested and is fully certified, stylish and secure. With its industry-leading attributes and performance, the Neuma fds fire door ticks all those boxes and more.
