Dodgy DIY costing homeowners £42m a year

Dodgy DIY costing homeowners £42m a year

Posted on 27/01/2016

UK homeowners are spending an additional £42m a year salvaging work around the home that they tried to do themselves.

This is according to recent research carried out by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

The FMB found that almost one third of homeowners called in a tradesperson to either finish or rescue work they had carried out on their property, costing on average an additional £871, compared to if they had hired a tradesperson from the start.

Jeremy Brett, Managing Director of the CPA, is urging homeowners looking to carry out home improvement products to seek a reputable and professional tradesmen.

He commented: “Ambitious DIY projects do go wrong. The best thing to do is go straight to a specialist but it’s important to make sure they are fit for the job. Unscrupulous tradespeople often do the job just as badly, if not worse, than your average DIY-er, costing much more in the long run.

“Companies listed under approved tradesmen schemes, such as the CPA, are qualified for the job and can offer Insurance Backed Guarantees and Deposit Protection to protect the homeowner should anything go wrong.”

The CPA is the UK’s leading provider of IBGs and Deposit Protection and is recognised by consumers as one of the most trusted resources for finding accredited and vetted installers.

The company recently launched #TOGETHERSTRONGER, a campaign aimed at installers to make them aware of the tools the CPA can offer to help them promote the benefits of choosing a trusted installer to homeowners to win more business in the home improvement market.

Fronting the campaign is sumo Yuki – a wrestler from Japan who will work tirelessly to protect the majority of good home improvement companies and promote best practice.

Jeremy comments: “Together with the CPA, installers have access to everything they need to increase sales in the home improvement market. This includes powerful sales and marketing support and our much sought after quarterly reports, which collate customer feedback to help installers identify areas of improvement to join us in raising standards across the industry.”
